Laurie Altschul '04
Senior Regulatory Consultant - Health Plan Licensing
鈥淢y primary takeaway鈥攆rom the University and the Ethics Center鈥攚as the idea of cultivating ethical discourse in everyday life, not as a separate discussion, but as something that informs all of our decisions.鈥
That鈥檚 how Laurie Altschul 鈥04 thinks about her experience at SCU. As a Hackworth Fellow at the Ethics Center, Altschul organized a program for her peers on ethics in film. 鈥淧art of my role as a Hackworth was bringing ethics to everyday conversations,鈥 she says.
Altschul is still performing that role. An attorney by training who now performs regulatory work with a major health maintenance organization, she is part of a team that interfaces with the plan鈥檚 regulator on issues relating to plan benefits and health care reform.
While the job involves 鈥渋nterpreting and navigating new and evolving regulations,鈥 Altschul says that her focus goes beyond legal compliance to ethics. 鈥淥ne thing that鈥檚 important for our organization鈥攚e always ask, 鈥榃hat ought we to be doing? What鈥檚 the best thing for members?鈥 in addition to just what do we have to do to comply with regulations.鈥
Altschul can trace that attitude back to SCU. 鈥淚 definitely did appreciate the culture at Santa Clara including the focus on doing the right thing.鈥
